21 HRS AGO - At last, we finally have another update on the Titans coordinator search. The last update featured one name on offense and one name on defense. Both names are on offense this time around as the Titans continue to hunt for Arthur Smith’s replacement.
The first name comes in the form of current Chargers QB coach Pep Hamilton.
#Chargers QBs coach Pep Hamilton has a big few days ahead. He’s interviewing for the #Titans OC job and the #Steelers OC job in the coming days, per me and @TomPelissero.— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 24, 2021
Hamilton obviously did terrific work with Justin Herbert this past season. Despite spending the 2020 season as a position coach, this wouldn’t be the first time Hamilton has coordinated an NFL offense. Hamilton coordinated the Colts’ offense from 2013-2015 to mixed results. He joined Indianapolis to reunite with Andrew Luck, a quarterback he once helped develop into a generational talent at Stanford when he served as the school’s quarterbacks coach Collapse

This could be something to monitor. We know that the Titans are potentially interested in hiring a defensive coordinator, something they didn’t have (in name) last season. There’s no guarantee that a hire will be made at all (or they could simply promote Shane Bowen), but there’s at least some outside interest here given the fact that they interviewed Teryl Austin recently.
We know that coaches typically like to hire someone they have a connection with. Most of Mike Vrabel’s staff either coached with him in Houston or at Ohio State. In some cases, Vrabel actually played under his assistants (Jim Haslett in Pittsburgh). Vrabel has shown a willingness to go outside his comfort zone here, but he mostly stays within his circle.
In the case of Austin, Vrabel does have two loose connections in common with him, although they’ve never coached or played together. Austin coached under Urban Meyer in 2010, and under Dean Pees shortly thereafter in Collapse

7 DAYS AGO - Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports
As we continue to reflect on the playoff loss to the Ravens, there’s a chance we’ve seen Corey Davis play his last game in a Tennessee Titans uniform. It’s a sad thought.
And if that’s the case, it deserved better.
Davis’ tenure in Tennessee has often been marked by disappointment. Davis has always been a great team player, but he’s never been a true No. 1 receiver. Those are the expectations that come with being the fifth overall selection in an NFL draft. When A.J. Brown was added to the fray, Davis took his rightful role as a very good No. 2 receiver.
Davis has battled through injuries and inconsistent play throughout his career. It made it that much sweeter to see him finally put it together in his fourth season. Davis posted career highs in yards (984) and touchdowns (5) while equaling his career best in catches (65).
He’s now set to hit free agency after putting together what was easily the best season of his young career. The Collapse

Adam Schefter is reporting that the Jacksonville Jaguars and Urban Meyer are in advance talks to make Meyer their next head coach. We have seen Meyer be wishy-washy in the past, so there is still a chance this won’t happen, but when Schefter comes out with something like this it usually happens. Meyer obviously has an extremely successful college track record. Will it translate to the NFL?
Of course Meyer, if he is the guy, gets the benefit of having the first overall pick and Trevor Lawrence (or is there a chance he could want Justin Fields??). The Jags will also have a ton of cap space. That makes the job very appealing.
What doesn’t make the job so appealing is Jacksonville is a terrible city, the Sparkle Kitty fans are the worst, and the owner has said he wants at least some control over personnel. That never goes well.
The Jaguars have found a way to screw up pretty much every decision they have ever made as a franchise. I have Collapse

As a community, we can all agree to reject any 2021 mock draft that doesn’t have the Titans selecting a pass rusher in the first round, correct? Because the mock isn’t worth our time if the person doing it hasn’t done at least enough homework to know that pass rush is the biggest need. In fact, I welcome mocks that have the Titans drafting a pass rusher in the first AND second round.
Also, the standard pre-free agency caveat applies - needs will be updated after they have signed some free agents. HOWEVA, signing a pass rusher should not discourage mock drafters from giving the Titans a pass rusher in the first round. They absolutely need both!
Today’s mock draft comes from Dane Brugler. You already know that Brugler does his homework, so of course, he has the Titans taking a pass rusher in the first round. That pass rusher is Zaven Collins, EDGE, Tulsa. Here are Brugler’s comments on the pick:

The Titans and Ravens wrote the next chapter of their rivalry this afternoon in Nashville. This time, it didn’t go Tennessee’s way. Lamar Jackson and Baltimore came out on top, in another dramatic, high-stakes matchup.
Here’s how it all played out.
AJ Brown kicked things off with a grown-man drive, beating up on Marlon Humphrey all the way down the field. Tennessee’s No. 1 receiver caught three passes as they Ravens keyed in on Derrick Henry, getting physical with Humphrey to score the game’s first touchdown.

Super wildcard weekend is here, and the Titans are set for a playoff rematch from last year. It’s a familiar playoff foe for Tennessee — the Baltimore Ravens.
The Titans went to Baltimore earlier this year and came away with a dramatic comeback win, capped off by a Derrick Henry touchdown run in overtime. Since that moment, the Ravens are 6-1 and have won five straight games, which is probably why Vegas likes them in this spot.
Baltimore opened as 3.5 point road favorites and remain 3 point favorites as of Saturday morning. The total sits at 54.5 — once again the highest of the weekend. If you’ll remember, Tennessee was about a touchdown underdog to this same team a couple of months ago.
For the Titans, we know the deal by now. It’s going to take at least 30 points to win as this defense continues to struggle. Lamar Jackson, who hit 1,000 yards rushing on the year last week, should find plenty of room to operate on Collapse

The Titans announced today they have activated Stephen Gostkowski from the COVID list. That is the good news here. The bad news is that they added Aaron Brewer to the COVID list. Brewer is the guy that has been stepping in for Rodger Saffold when Saffold hasn’t been able to play or finish a game.
Saffold said yesterday that he is going to play. He said there is nothing that could keep him from this opportunity. We should all be saying our prayers tonight that he is able to hold up for this entire game because without Brewer you have Jamil Douglas stepping into that role. That would be a #notgood development for the Titans.
We don’t know at this point if Brewer tested positive or not, but that won’t matter for this week. He is out for the Ravens. It would matter if the Titans win whether or not he could be back the following week. Collapse

He’s coming out of retirement again. The Tennessee Titans certainly missed Dean Pees in 2020. The veteran defensive coordinator retired following the 2019 season, leaving a void on the coaching staff that wasn’t ever exactly filled. Mike Vrabel elevated outside linebackers coach Shane Bowen, but didn’t officially give him the coordinator title.
Today, Pees is back — just not with the Titans. He’s joining the Atlanta Falcons as a part of former Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s staff.

Philip Rivers announced this morning that he is retiring. He will become the head coach for a high school football team in Alabama. Can we get a camera to follow him on the sidelines so we can still have GIFs to use of the faces he makes?
Rivers retires with 63,440 passing yards and 421 touchdowns. He also constantly tortured the Titans throughout his career. Luckily the last time the Titans saw him they were able to beat him. That gave the Titans their first AFC South crown since 2008. Thanks, Philip.
The bigger impact here for the Titans is that the Colts are now searching for a quarterback. This season they paid a ton of money to Rivers and Jacoby Brissett. Both of those guys are off their books for 2021. They did draft Jacob Eason in last year’s draft. Would they be willing to turn the keys of a pretty talented team over to him? Will they try to re-sign Brissett. Will they go after Carson Wentz who Frank Reich coached in Collapse

It’s now official, Arthur Smith is the new head coach of the Atlanta Falcons. We knew this was probably going to happen this morning when it was reported that the Falcons had made him an offer. A huge congratulation to Art. He has a really cool story. There aren’t many people in his situation that would pay his dues like Arthur has. I think he will do a great job.
It will be interesting to see where the Titans turn from here. This is now the second time that Mike Vrabel has lost his offensive coordinator to become the head coach of another team. That had never happened for the Titans before this. That’s really something.
We know Vrabel is willing to look outside the box for an offensive coordinator. It shouldn’t be such a tough sell for him to get someone here. If they get everyone healthy on the offensive line and add another wide receiver or two, there is no reason this group can’t be just as good, if not better, Collapse

Pinkney was electric at Vanderbilt and quickly developed into a local fan favorite. In four seasons at Vanderbilt, Pinkney had 114 catches for 1,560 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns. As a junior, Pinkney tallied 50 receptions for 774 yards and seven touchdowns, while earning second-team All-SEC accolades. He’s one of the best offensive playmakers to don the Commodore colors in the past decade.
This has the potential to be a very interesting signing for the Titans. The tight end position is very much in flux as Tennessee heads into a crucial offseason. Jonnu Smith, Geoff Swaim and MyCole Pruitt are all headed for free agency while Anthony Firkser is a restricted free agent. Should one or more of these Collapse

Skipper is probably the best name on this list. He actually played quite well in run support when he was on the field this season. He should have a chance to make the team again in 2021.
Long snapper Orzech could also be a name to watch, depending on what happens with current long snapper and free agent to be Matt Overton.
Another interesting name here is McCann. The Titans like him quite a bit. Stephen Gostkowski was really good down the stretch, but there’s no guarantee that he’s back in 2021. Before the angry comments start to roll in, let’s get something out of the way: The Titans have a very good head coach in Mike Vrabel. He made a terrible, cowardly and pitiful decision in a crucial moment in the playoffs. Both of these things can be true.
With 10:06 left in fourth quarter, the Titans were faced with a fourth-and-two from Baltimore’s 40-yard line. They were losing the game 17-13. Instead of trusting his offense to convert, Vrabel decided to punt the ball. It was a head-scratcher. It was the opposite of bold and aggressive, two words often used to describe Vrabel’s in-game coaching style.
Brett Kern got off a poor punt and the decision to boot it away “gained” the Titans a pathetic 25 yards. The Ravens took possession at their own 15 and chewed a bunch of clock on a nine-play, 52-yard drive that resulted in a field goal.
It meant the Titans needed to drive 80 yards in the dying moments just to tie the contest. It wasn’t to Collapse

They are also going to have to make a decision on their first-round pick who doesn’t seem all that interested in playing, you know, football.
We know they need a pass rusher - or three - but that isn’t the only area of need they have there. The depth at wide receiver got exposed when Corey Davis was injured late in the loss to the Ravens. Let me start by saying that Mike Vrabel has done a fantastic job as the head coach of the Tennessee Titans. He was billed as a “leader of men” when he was hired and has proven to be that in his three years here. His record speaks for itself.
With that being said, Vrable still has some work today on his in-game coaching decisions. The latest one being the decision to punt on 4th and 2 yesterday. The Titans lost the game at that moment, and here’s why:
The Titans under Vrabel have forged an identity as a physical football team. They want to line up and punch you in the mouth at the line of scrimmage - especially on offense with Derrick Henry running the football. If that is what you are built on, you can’t punt the ball away down by a touchdown on 4th and 2 at your own 44 in the 4th quarter of a playoff game you are losing by a touchdown. You just can’t.
